The Myth of the Diploma
Teenagers are in between the innocence of childhood and the independence of adulthood. It's tempting to fall into the trap that success will happen as a result of good grades and going to a good college. It's just not that simple. The path to success is all about creating a powerful sense of self.
Take a moment to think about the world that they are facing. If you like, think about the adults in your life that are truly happy and healthy.
How many people do you know who love their job, are in a thriving relationship, feel healthy, can support their family financially, have habits that support their contribution to the world. How many adults, how many people did you think about and say to yourself "yikes, they're having a hard time".
If more than 4 out of 10 of the adults you thought about were in the "yikes, they're struggling" category, you probably realize how daunting the world looks to today's teenagers. Imagine if the challenge your teens are facing is that even if they handle all the pressure and do well in school, get to college, and get out into the world, that the happiness and success they anticipated isn't there. What they thought would happen when they got that diploma isn't happening.
Imagine the difficulty they face, the betrayal they feel, when the promise that all the hard work would pay off doesn't come through.
The place to get started with cultivating a powerful sense of self, and beginning the journey to a happy, healthy and inpired life, is with one of the most challenging and important places for parents and teens: trouble.
